Part count and design of robust systems

چکیده
Systems engineering frequently includes efforts to reduce part count with the goal of cutting costs, enhancing performance, or improving reliability. This paper examines the engineering practices related to part count, applying three different theories -the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, Axiomatic Design, and Highly Optimized Tolerance. Case studies from the jet engine industry are used to illustrate the complicated trades-offs involved in real-world part count reduction efforts. The principal conclusions are that: 1) part consolidation at the component level has generally been accomplished as technological advancements enable them which is consistent with the “law of ideality” in the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving; 2) part count reduction frequently increases coupling among functional requirements, design parameters, and processing variables while also delivering higher reliability which conflicts with the theory of Axiomatic Design and; 3) at the overall system level, jet engine part count has generally increased in response to escalating demands for system robustness as suggested by the theory of Highly Optimized Tolerance.

A robust state feedback design subject to placement of the closed loop eigenvalues in a prescribed region of unit circle is presented. Quantitative measures of robustness and disturbance rejection are investigated. A stochastic optimization algorithm is used to effect trade-off between the free design parameters and to accomplish all the design criteria. A numerical example is given to illustra...

In this article, a new approach is proposed to design robust switching gain-scheduled dynamic output feedback control for switched uncertain continuous-time linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. The proposed robust switching gain-scheduled controllers are robustly designed so that the stability and H2-gain performance of the switched closed-loop uncertain LPV system can be guaranteed even und...

In this paper, H∞ controller is synthesized for networked systems subject to random transmission delays with known upper bound and different occurrence probabilities in the both of feedback (sensor to controller) and forward (controller to actuator) channels. A remote observer is employed to improve the performance of the system by computing non-delayed estimates of the sates. The closed-loop s...

This paper presents a robust controller design methodology for a class of linear uncertain multivariable systems with hard time-domain constraints on their outputs and control signals in response to step disturbance inputs. In this approach, the m×m MIMO system is replaced by m2 SISO systems and then, using the QFT technique, desirable controllers are synthesized. The final controller will be d...

In this paper, a fractional-order robust adaptive intelligent controller (FRAIC) is designed for a class of chaotic fractional order systems with uncertainty, external disturbances and unknown time-varying input time delay. The time delay is considered both constant and time varying. Due to changes in the equilibrium point, adaptive control is used to update the system's momentary information a...
